April Showers Bring May Flowers: Ayurvedic Spring Tips

Heavy, wet and muddy are how we would currently describe Connecticut!

According to Ayurveda, spring is called kapha season. Kapha literally means “to stick together.” It’s a muddy, wet and rainy time of year in nature, where the earth is holding onto more water. This is nature’s response to a long dry winter. As the Earth swells with new moisture, seeds begin to germinate, flowers bloom, and the trees begin to bud. 
The body, too, will hold onto more water during the spring! And we are filled with a new energy and desire to be active, such as our desire to spring clean our homes and cars! This swell of water can also congest the mucus membranes that line the respiratory and digestive tracts. As an antidote, nature provides a harvest of foods that are low in fat and thus do not congest the body.
This time of year is known in Ayurveda as nature’s perfect opportunity to cleanse and rejuvenate the body. As John Douillard writes, “Within our bodies, those winter microbes that are geared for keeping the body warm and digesting heavier foods are transitioning to spring microbes that have a new purpose – fat burning, natural weight loss, stable mood and renewed energy for the full year ahead.”
 Here are some spring tips to eat with the seasonal changes this spring:
  1. Avoid congestive foods, such as refined carbs like wheat, dairy, sugar and high-fat foods.

  3. Split the remaining 1/3 of your plate between a protein and a healthy starch.
  4. Drink 6-8 glasses of water per day.
  5. Sip hot water throughout the day during allergy season.
  6. Vitamin C blocks the release of histamine from inflammatory cells. Get plenty of vitamin C – rich foods, such as citrus fruits (grapefruits are in season), papayas, broccoli, brussel sprouts, bell peppers and kale.
  7. Drink dandelion root tea: 2-3 cups daily during allergy season.
